Air Midwest Flight 5481 was a regularly scheduled domestic passenger flight from Charlotte, North Carolina to Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina. On January 8, 2003, the Beechcraft 1900D aircraft operating the flight crashed shortly after takeoff from Charlotte Douglas International Airport, resulting in the deaths of all 21 people on board.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) conducted an investigation into the crash and determined that the probable cause was the airplane's center of gravity being outside of the certified envelope, which led to a loss of control during takeoff. The investigation also found that the airline's maintenance and regulatory oversight contributed to the accident.
The crash of Air Midwest Flight 5481 was one of the deadliest accidents involving a Beechcraft 1900 aircraft and resulted in changes to FAA regulations regarding maintenance procedures and oversight of regional airlines. It serves as a reminder of the importance of strict adherence to safety protocols in the aviation industry.
